Regrets: John Parker.
Previous Minutes: Moved by Lynn and approved by Ron.
1. Passing of an early member: It is with sadness that we discussed the passing of Dorothy Ottaway, who was a past chair of the TDSB.
2. Report from Ron Stagg re: his petition on removing the plaque on the TMU campus: The signatures on the petition are at 527. When it surpassed 500 he let Michael Forbes at TMU know that there are more that want the plaque down than want it to remain. The plan is to update TMU every time we grow the petition by another 100 signatures.
Lynn suggested that since the plaque is wrong and historically inaccurate that we ask to discuss the plaque with the small group who object to it being removed and Ron said he will suggest that.
George suggested contacting the Eye Opener to get them to write about the plaque. Ron is going to approach the editor in chief to “reopen” the issue. And Len Fortune would like to be involved in contacting the Eye Opener with this idea as he spent 4 years working there. The culture of the paper is completely different now than it was then, but he will be in touch with Ron to strategize further.
3. Report from Ron Stagg on a letter to Dr. Robins, interim principal, Victoria College, about the grossly erroneous “Presidential Report” on Ryerson.
Ron sent a letter to Dr. Robins proving that some of the panel’s conclusions were wrong and he wants to meet with Ron in November to discuss further. (The Victoria Panel approved a faulty document).
4. Report on Port Credit commemoration, Sept. 20
We thanked everyone involved for the successful event we had on September 20th, 2026. The youtube video will be released soon.
5. Planning for our next event (presentation in Toronto of the successful Port Credit commemoration)
We discussed planning this event for sometime in March 2027. Lynn suggested contacting The Bridge news or the Eye Opener to place advertisements and that we look into the Campbell house as a possible event location. Wendy is going to check with the Neill-Wycik residence to see if we can book a room there for our event.
6. Other business
Betty Trott has worked on a paper with others that will be published online within 2027.
7. Possible in-person social event in Toronto
This is being planned for Saturday Nov 28th at Rose’s place.
Next meeting: Sunday Nov 15th, 2026, 4pm.
March 2027 next event.
