Egerton Ryerson’s Journalism: A Look Back at the Christian Guardian – June 21, 2025

The event delved into the influential role of Egerton Ryerson as editor of the Christian Guardian, a publication that was the highest-circulation magazine in Upper Canada during its time. Ryerson leveraged his editorial platform to champion significant causes, including democratic reform, the rights of Indigenous peoples, the establishment of free schools, and the abolition of slavery. The presentation was organized by Lynn McDonald and featured a selection of readings from the magazine by a group of talented readers. A short report was also presented by Ron Stagg, who provided valuable context by outlining the state of journalism in Upper Canada for comparative purposes. With readings by Andrew Houser, Bruce Weber, John Parker, Len Fortune, Megan Kulkarni, Oskar Hanson, Ron Stagg & Rose Dyson.
